About three weeks ago, I took a spill while running. The fourth in 13 years, this was the most gory, the most concerning about the knee that took the brunt of the impact. Moving at a decent clip downhill on the side of road, I was airborne and flat out in mere seconds, landing with a spectacular smash on the gravel and dirt. It’s just this week that I’ve been able to return.
I’m not unaware when running, keeping an eye out for leaves or wooden bridges slick from rain, for pine needles, for thin sheets of ice unseen in winter, for tree roots.
And my falls have never happened under those circumstances.
They happen when I least expect it.
Someone asked me if I were afraid now, afraid of falling. Which is a reasonable question.
And I heard myself saying, without hesitation, that I am not.
I will still look for slick spots, for ice and tree roots. I will still be deeply grateful that I am able to be out there, legs and lungs carrying me over the earth.
But I will go.
Because the joy and fulfillment is worth the risk of the fall.
